How to Save Text Messages from Your Android Phone for Court

The short answer: Save the conversation itself, not just screenshots. The PDF should show who sent each message, with the date and time, and include any pictures. Do it before you delete anything, reset your phone, or switch phones. Then give your attorney the PDF. EvidentlySo does this on a Windows PC: you connect your Android phone through Google Messages for web, choose the conversations, and EvidentlySo saves a dated PDF of each one to your own Dropbox.

Why context matters

A single screenshot shows a few messages with no context. It usually leaves out the date, the messages before and after, and sometimes who sent what. If the other side says something was cut out or taken out of context, a screenshot can’t answer that.

A PDF of the conversation shows it in order, with each message’s sender, date, and time. Nothing is cropped, so there’s less to argue about. It can only include what your phone still has and makes available to the app. Deleted messages, and on some phones some encrypted chat messages, won’t be in it (see the known limits).

Your options on Android

1. Screenshots

  • Free and fast.
  • Easy to crop, and often missing dates and context.
  • Hard to read when there are many of them.

2. Your phone’s built-in backup (Google or Samsung)

  • Good for moving messages to a new phone.
  • You can’t easily read it, choose conversations, or print it. It isn’t made for court.

3. A dedicated tool

  • Turns your conversations into a readable file, usually a PDF.
  • Tools differ in where your messages go. Some upload them to the company’s servers. Check before you choose.

What a good PDF includes

  • The conversation’s messages in order, not just a few
  • The sender, date, and time of each message
  • Picture messages
  • Who’s in each conversation: their phone numbers, and their names if you choose to show them
  • A first page that lists the dates and how many messages, photos and files it holds
  • A way to show the file hasn’t been changed since it was created

Step by step with EvidentlySo

With EvidentlySo: install it on your Windows PC from the Download page, connect your Dropbox, and pair your phone by scanning a QR code with Google Messages on your phone. Then choose the conversation and its dates, and make the PDF. It’s saved to your Dropbox.

Step by step: Support › PDFs.

Each PDF holds one conversation, over one unbroken range of dates. Page 1 shows who’s in the conversation, the dates covered and the phone. Every page’s footer shows the Transcript ID, the page number and a record code, and anyone can check at EvidentlySo.com/Verify that the file hasn’t changed since it was generated. A PDF can only include messages that were on the phone when they were saved: messages deleted before then won’t be in it.

What to give your attorney

  • A PDF of each conversation that matters
  • Page 1, which lists the dates and how many messages, photos and files the PDF holds

Ask your attorney how they want to receive it. Don’t post it online or send it to the other side yourself unless your attorney tells you to.

Common mistakes

Does EvidentlySo work on iPhone?

Yes. EvidentlySo runs on a Windows PC for both. For an iPhone, you back it up to the PC with Apple’s free Apple Devices app, and EvidentlySo reads that backup.

This is general information, not legal advice. Ask your attorney how to present messages in your case.
