Installing EvidentlySo

EvidentlySo is downloaded directly from our website, not from the Google Play Store (yet). Android asks for an extra OK when you install an app this way. Here’s how. It takes about two minutes.

You’ll need

  • An Android phone running Android 7.0 or newer [APP: confirm before launch]
  • A Dropbox account (a free one works if you have room)

Steps

  1. On your phone, go to evidentlyso.com/download.[Screenshot for this step]
  2. Tap Download for Android. If Chrome warns that the file might be harmful, tap Download anyway.[Screenshot for this step]
  3. When the download finishes, tap Open.[Screenshot for this step]
  4. Android may say your phone isn’t allowed to install unknown apps from this source. Tap Settings, turn on Allow from this source, then go back.[Screenshot for this step]
  5. Tap Install. If Google Play Protect asks about the app, tap More details, then Install anyway. [REVIEW: exact wording once Android developer verification is done][Screenshot for this step]
  6. Open EvidentlySo. Tap Connect Dropbox and sign in.[Screenshot for this step]
  7. When Android asks, allow the app to read your text messages. This is required: it’s how the app copies them. [APP: confirm before launch][Screenshot for this step]
  8. The app then asks for your contacts. This is optional. If you allow it, your capture shows names next to phone numbers. The app saves only the names for numbers in your messages, and only to your own Dropbox. Your address book never leaves your phone. [APP: confirm before launch][Screenshot for this step]
  9. See what it found. The app counts your messages and conversations right on your phone. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere yet.[Screenshot for this step]
  10. Tap Capture and choose Text Extraction or Extraction + Monthly Updates (see Pricing). Checkout opens in your browser. After you pay, you’re sent back to the app and your capture starts.[Screenshot for this step]

Updates

Because the app doesn’t come from the Play Store, it checks our site for new versions and tells you when one is ready.
